How It Works
SailboatReference makes it easy to find and compare detailed technical information about sailing yachts. Here's how to get the most out of our platform.
1. Search for Yachts
Use our search tool to find yachts by model name, builder, or designer. You can filter results by various criteria including length, displacement, and year built.
2. View Detailed Specifications
Each yacht page includes comprehensive technical data:
- Dimensions: LOA, LWL, beam, draft, and more
- Weight: Displacement, ballast, and ratios
- Sail Plan: Sail areas and rig dimensions
- Performance: Calculated ratios like SA/D, comfort ratio, hull speed
- Engine: Make, model, and power specifications
- Production: Years built and number produced
3. Create an Account (Optional)
Sign up for a free account to unlock additional features:
- Save your favorite yachts for easy access
- Add private notes to each favorite

- Compare different models side by side
4. Save Your Favorites
When you find a yacht you're interested in, click the "Add to Favorites" button. You can add personal notes (up to 1000 characters) to keep track of your thoughts, comparisons, or research.
Understanding the Data
We provide several calculated performance ratios to help you understand a yacht's characteristics:
- SA/D (Sail Area to Displacement): Indicates how much power the sail plan has relative to the weight
- Displacement/Length: Shows if a design is light or heavy for its length
- Comfort Ratio: Estimates motion comfort at sea
- Capsize Screening: Evaluates ocean-going suitability
- Hull Speed: Theoretical maximum speed based on waterline length
